Membership in Lavender Light is by audition. We are seeking women and men who have gospel music experience.

Auditions are by appointment only! To make an appointment, please call us at (212) 714-7072, and leave a message with your name and telephone number. Someone will get back to you shortly.

In planning for the audition, please prepare a gospel song, spiritual, or hymn. A pop song is also acceptable to demonstrate the quality of your voice. This should be a song that you know well and feel comfortable with. You may sing a cappella or with your own sheet music -- accompaniment will be provided. If you prefer to sing with a taped accompaniment, you must provide your own tape or disk player. In addition, you should read our Mission Statement (see the About Us page).

To familiarize potential members with our methods prior to auditioning, we hold open rehearsals. All interested candidates are urged to attend one open rehearsal. You can schedule your open rehearsal visit when scheduling your audition appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about auditioning for Lavender Light? Here are some helpful answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Who should audition?

We ask that singers have at least one year of gospel music experience, and can make a one-year commitment to the group.

How do I prepare for the audition?

To plan for the audition, you should prepare a gospel song, spiritual, or hymn. A pop song is also acceptable to demonstrate the quality of your voice. This should be a song that you know well and feel comfortable with. You may sing a cappella or with your own sheet music--accompaniment will be provided. If you prefer to sing with a taped accompaniment, you must provide your own tape or disk player. In addition, you should read our Mission Statement (see the About page).

What is the audition process like?

An audition committee--which includes our musical director, two members of the Board of Officers, and other musical assistants--will listen to you and make the final decision as to whether your talents will be a good fit with the choir. You may be asked to:

  • Vocally repeat a played musical phrase (very important, as we learn most of our music by ear).
  • Move and clap rhythmically to a musical selection.
  • Talk about why you want to join Lavender Light, what you can contribute, what your expectations are, and how our Mission Statement resonates with you.

When are rehearsals, and how often do you perform?

Lavender Light rehearses every Monday from 6:30–9:30 pm at The Friends' Meeting House, 221 East 15th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues) in Manhattan. The entrance to The Meeting House is on Rutherford Place.

We produce two concerts per year, usually in January and May. Beginning approximately 4 to 6 weeks before a concert, we may occasionally rehearse twice a week, the second rehearsal usually on a Saturday afternoon. Additionally, we perform at various venues in and out of the New York Metropolitan Area, and all members are required to participate in seventy-five percent (75%) of those performances.

All new members must complete a three-month probation period, during which time you and the choir can decide if the “fit” is right.

Are there dues?

Yes. Dues are $25 per month, payable on the first Monday of the month.
