Co-founder, in 1995, of the GRIOT Circle – an organization which named her executive director in 2000 – Regina was an
activist dedicated to creating a nurturing space for LGBT elders; specifically people of color who, oftentimes, felt
there was no safe space for them to turn.
A 1960’s peace activist, and one of the first openly-LGBT leaders in New York City’s municipal labor unions, she also
served as a member of the Mayor’s Police Council on Gay & Lesbian Concerns and played an active role in the Campaign for
an Inclusive Family Policy, the citywide coalition that negotiated with Mayor David Dinkins to obtain domestic partner benefits for NYC employees.
A witness to, and participant in, the civil right’s movement, the women’s rights movement, and the LGBT fight for equal
rights, in her we gained not only a respect for the generations that came before us, but the strength to step out on
faith and continue the groundwork they laid down for us.
Courage is defined as "the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty without fear." It’s in
her footsteps that Lavender Light hopes to follow.
